Hello Eye Family!
We have had many questions about Coronavirus 19 COVID-19 and contact lens use over the past few weeks.
Here are some facts, tips and myth busters…
FACTS:
- Eye retainers and daily wear contact lenses reduce your risk of getting viruses, bacteria and other germs in contact with your eyes.
- Hydrogen peroxide cleaners, such as AquaClear from CooperVision are the best contact lens disinfectants.
- Washing your hands with soap is the best way to clean your hands. But make sure you wash for at least 20 seconds.
TIPS:
- If your eyes feel irritated, do not wear your contact lenses. Eye irritation can be a symptom of pink or red eyes, corneal abrasions or ulcers. Come in for an eye check up!
- HEALTHY HABITS = HEALTHY EYES.
- Do not “stretch out” your contact lenses. Contact lens manufacturers have replacement schedules for a reason, take care of your eyes.
MYTHS & BUSTERS:
- COVID-19 eye infection…. FICTION. Currently, there is no scientific evidence that contact lens wearers have an increased risk of contracting COVID-19 versus glasses wearers. But, each person has risk factors that put him or her at higher risk of infections. Consult your eye care practitioner for more information.
- There is no harm in using multiple different contact lens solutions. FICTION. Different solutions are formulated differently, and certain ingredients may not work well with your eyes, causing irritation, redness, contact lens intolerance and even surface damage. Also, studies are either limited or none comparing brand name contact lenses to generic contact lens solutions.
