Why light hurts: photophobia and migraine
Roughly 80–90% of people with migraine experience photophobia — pain or discomfort from light that most people tolerate easily. Researchers have traced this to special cells in the retina (intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells) that connect directly to the brain’s pain pathways. These cells are most reactive to blue-green wavelengths, roughly 480–520 nm. That is why a lens that is simply dark isn’t the best answer: total darkness dims everything, but it doesn’t specifically remove the wavelengths driving the discomfort. The most helpful lenses are spectrally selective — tuned to filter the problem wavelengths while letting comfortable light through.
The dark-sunglasses trap. Wearing dark sunglasses indoors feels good in the moment, but over time it causes “dark adaptation” — your eyes adjust to the artificially dim baseline and become more sensitive to normal light, so you end up reaching for darker and darker lenses. For everyday indoor use, a lighter, purpose-built tint is the better long-term choice. Save the dark sunglasses for bright outdoor conditions.
FL-41: the indoor and fluorescent-light tint
FL-41 is a rose-colored tint that filters about 80% of light in the 480–520 nm range — the blue-green band most linked to migraine photophobia and to fluorescent-light sensitivity. Because it stays relatively light, it’s designed for extended indoor wear: offices, classrooms, screens, and overhead lighting. In studies, FL-41 reduced migraine frequency in children by more than half, and many patients prefer it over standard gray sunglasses for daily comfort.
One honest caveat: FL-41 is best thought of as a tool to reduce how often and how strongly light triggers symptoms, not as a switch that stops a migraine already in progress. Results also vary from person to person, which is exactly why a trial and a proper fitting matter.
Avulux: a precision tint for indoors and out
Avulux lenses take a more targeted approach. They filter blue, amber, and red wavelengths while letting through the green light around 520 nm that tends to be most comfortable — and they do it while looking like a neutral, near-gray lens rather than rose. Because they don’t darken everything, they can be worn indoors and outdoors without causing the dark-adaptation problem described above.
The evidence is promising but still developing. A randomized, placebo-controlled trial did not show a clear difference on its main pain-reduction measure, though follow-up analysis found benefit for people who started with more noticeable pain, along with reports of less light sensitivity. For many patients, the practical appeal is comfort and flexibility across different lighting all day.

A quick word on yellow “night-driving” glasses
Some people with light sensitivity try yellow-tinted lenses for night driving. Yellow can boost perceived contrast in certain low-light tasks, but yellow “night-driving” glasses sold to reduce headlight glare are not shown to improve night-driving safety — and because any tint reduces the light reaching your eyes after dark, they can make seeing harder when you need it most. If glare at night is your main issue, an anti-reflective coating on a clear lens is usually the better, evidence-based fix.

They’re best at reducing how often light triggers attacks and making everyday environments more comfortable. They are not a reliable way to abort an attack that has already started.
Can I get them in my prescription?
Yes. Both FL-41 and Avulux can be made in your prescription, including progressives and single-vision lenses.
Are these the same as blue-light computer glasses?
No. Most clear blue-light lenses filter only a small slice of light below about 460 nm and let through much of the 480–520 nm band that matters most for migraine. Purpose-built tints filter that band far more effectively.
