Lens tints, explained

Lens tints do more than darken your view — the right one helps your eyes pick out what matters, whether that's a golf ball against the fairway, the road ahead, or comfort under harsh lighting. Here's how to choose.

People often shop for "dark sunglasses," but a lens is doing three separate jobs — and it helps to choose each one on purpose.

Color

Decides which details stand out. Pick it for the task — greens on a golf course, a fast ball, true traffic-light color.

Darkness

How much light gets through (called VLT). Pick it for the conditions — brighter sun, darker lens.

Polarization

A filter, not a tint. Cuts blinding glare off water, roads, and snow. Great in some settings, not all.

Gray / G-15

Neutral and true to color, with even glare reduction. The all-purpose choice when accurate color matters — like driving.

Brown / Amber / Copper

Boosts contrast and depth by filtering blue light. Excellent for green-and-grass sports and changing light; shifts color slightly.

Rose / Vermillion

Pushes contrast hardest, especially for fast-moving objects and flat, overcast light.

Yellow

Sharpens contrast in genuine low-light, fog, or haze — in daytime. Not for night driving (more on that below).

A precision rose tint for migraine and light sensitivity, filtering the blue-green light that tends to trigger discomfort.

Worth knowingThe truth about night-driving glasses

Yellow-tinted "night-driving" glasses are heavily marketed, but the research doesn't back the claims — they don't reduce headlight glare or help you spot pedestrians any better than clear lenses. Because any tint cuts the light reaching your eyes after dark, they can leave you feeling like you see better while you actually see less.

For night driving, the best upgrade is a clear lens with an anti-reflective (AR) coating to reduce the halos around oncoming headlights. A clean windshield and properly aimed headlights help, too.

For comfortMigraines, headaches & light sensitivity

If bright light, screens, or fluorescent bulbs trigger headaches or eye strain, the right tint can be a daily tool rather than just a comfort. Light sensitivity is one of the most common features of migraine, and certain wavelengths provoke it more than others.

FL-41 — a precision rose tint

FL-41 filters the blue-green band of light most linked to migraine and light sensitivity — the kind that pours out of fluorescent tubes, LEDs, and screens. Research since the 1990s has found it can reduce how often migraines strike and ease light sensitivity. It's worn light enough for everyday use, indoors and out.

Honest notes: tints aren't a cure and work best when light is a clear trigger; the rose tint shifts color slightly; and leaning on dark sunglasses indoors can actually make eyes more sensitive over time. We'll help match the lens to your symptoms at your exam.

Common questionsQuick answers

Do yellow glasses help with night driving?

No. Studies show they don't reduce headlight glare or improve how well you spot pedestrians compared with clear lenses, and any tint cuts the light reaching your eyes at night. A clear lens with an anti-reflective coating is the better choice.

Are purple or lavender lenses good for migraines?

What matters is the wavelengths the lens filters, not the color name. Lavender is usually just a lighter version of an FL-41 migraine tint, made for comfortable everyday wear. A deep purple chosen purely for looks won't necessarily help — so the lens should be picked by what it filters, ideally with professional guidance.

Will polarized lenses mess with my car's screens?

They can. Polarized lenses cut reflected glare really well, but they sometimes dim or distort LCD dashboards and navigation displays. It's worth checking your vehicle's screens before choosing polarized driving lenses.

How dark should a sports tint be?

Usually light to medium. For fast sports like tennis and baseball you want plenty of light coming through so your eyes react quickly — the contrast benefit comes from the tint's color, not its darkness. Bright-sun driving is the main reason to go genuinely dark.

Can tints go on my prescription glasses?

Yes. Most tints, including FL-41 and polarized options, can be applied to prescription lenses in a range of materials. The best choice depends on your prescription, activities, and light sensitivity, which we can sort out together.

Photophobia is often one of the most disabling symptoms of cone dystrophy. Precision filters can reduce discomfort and improve visual performance in bright conditions.

Because the cone system doesn't function normally, bright light can be overwhelming. Deep red and custom filters may dramatically reduce light sensitivity for many patients.
